So often the revival actor has such a hard job living up to the original performance. I agree about Amber Riley. Sometime see on youtube John Cullum (in concert from TV in 1982) doing "I Rise Again" from On the Twentieth Century - who could equal his understanding of the part and its style? Everyone since looks lazy, even when they're doing their darndest.

And who has ever equaled Len Cariou as Sweeney?

I sigh for greatness! Is it that actors now are trained to be small for television and film? They have great skill, but where is aplomb? In the case of Dreamgirls, where's the bite, the tenacity, the need?
