|Maybe I heard too much hype, but I wasn't as bowled over as most people seem to be. It's certainly a lovey production and I enjoyed myself, but I didn't find it exceptional.
I did love Creel and Baldwin. The ensemble was thrilling. It was nice to see an ensemble of different shapes and sizes. It made sense for the show and period. Sunday Clothes was stunning. The entire first act moved along nicely.
The second act got bogged down once we got to Harmonia Gardens. I can't explain why, but I didn't find the title number thrilling. I saw the 96 Channing production and remember being thrilled with the number that time around.
Midler is good, has indelible star power, but I don't think she's giving a brilliant performance. She may get there. She certainly has her moments, but overall I found her performance inconsistent.
I didn't care for the addition of Penny in My Pocket. I think it steals some thunder from Elegance, which is a great curtain raiser.
These are small quibbles, but for me it prevented the show from being outstanding.
