I'm wondering if Midler is paying homage (ok, stealing) that "exhausted" shtick from the Pearl Bailey revival. In Boston, Pearl . . . almost . . . got through the title number then with about 30 seconds to the end was too pooped to continue, stopped the kids, stopped the band, stopped the light cues, stopped everything and just sat at the edge of the stage with her legs dangling into the pit, then asked someone to bring her a glass of grape juice, and sipped and relaxed and told a few anecdotes about herself, then, verve regained, she called back out the cast and they did the entire number all over again from the top. It was one of the most audacious and self indulgent things I've ever seen an actor do on stage and I ate up and loved every damned second of it and by the time they finished that number it was an absolute joy and love fest in the theatre because our cheering helped Pearl made it to the end.
