I was pleasantly surprised that Creel and Baldwin both got entrance applause.
Baldwin's led to a very funny moment. Beanie Feldstein, as Minnie Fay, is talking to the audience when Baldwin enters the stage behind her, out of her line of vision. So the audience applauds, and Feldstein looks out at the audience and says in an aw-shucks manner, "Thank you." It works perfectly. We find out soon afterwards that Irene Molloy's appearance is supposed to catch Minnie Fay off guard (at least in this production), which builds nicely on the idea that Minnie Fay doesn't know that Molloy is there and she doesn't understand why the audience is applauding. I assume Feldstein does that every night that Baldwin gets entrance applause, but unfortunately I think as the run continues and the audience makeup changes, Baldwin and Creel might not get that applause anymore.
Given the overall look of the season, I think Creel is a lock for a Tony nom as Featured Actor. I think Feldstein is more likely to get nominated then Baldwin because she is much funnier. And I think it's great that the production cast a plus-size actress as Minnie Fay, although there were parts in the second act that came close to using her size as a laugh line. I don't think they crossed the line, but I wish that they had steered farther away from that area entirely.
