Just as print media failed (perhaps largely unavoidably) to negotiate the waters of the 21st Century, so too some of the old web presences have not caught up. Picking up on your point about FB and the cost of getting targeted penetration, I'd also note that places like Playbill are/have been losing steam in the "email blast" business, because the costs are literally 100s of times greater for what is inherently a less rich experience. (By which I mean that an email blast is a "flat" experience and not an interactive one. )
