Maybe a Billy of color will strip the audience of some of its comfort zones -- and preconceptions about quaint New England life in among the working class -- and make the story's texture vibrant and immediate. Or not; who knows? It's certainly compelling risk taking. We can imagine that other black characters will be added, as they were in the LTC staging. Mostly I think of how long the show has been revived, without the role being available to actors of color. It's a great American piece, and will benefit from anything and everything that makes it vital and satisfying.
