Minchin's lyrics for Groundhog Day are as clever as they were for Matilda--and almost as damn near unintelligible.
The season Matilda and Kinky Boots were duking it out, I remember reports of Cyndi Lauper foregoing house seats or a standing position in the back of the orchestra to watch the show. Instead, she and sound designer John Shivers sat in a different spot of the house each night, trying to make sure they heard Kinky Boots in all the different locations that audience members would be hearing it. It definitely worked. Even with some of the bad dialects, I could understand every lyric. Shivers definitely deserved that Tony award.
