I wonder if someone like Vincente Minnelli might have done a better job with the film and reigned in some of the excess, while also allowing what makes DOLLY special to come across on film. I've always thought Gene Kelly was an odd choice, considering that this was never going to be a dance-focused piece like AN AMERICAN IN PARIS had been.

If she'd been well enough at that point, Judy Garland might have been a spectacular Dolly.
