At the closing performance of the original Hello, Dolly!, almost everyone in the audience had probably seen the show multiple times, so there was lots of cheering, and Merman got four standing ovations. The first was when the trolley came on for "Call on Dolly," and we all knew who was behind the newspaper she was holding in front of her face. While the audience response was tremendous for the entire performance, there was nothing special at the end that I recall, no speeches. Someone in the show did place on the stage the "closed" sign from the door to Horace's store, and that was it.
