Considering Sondheim's oft stated preference for actors who sing rather than the reverse, your reservations about Gyllenhaal are interesting. I saw the show on Sunday afternoon and found Jake's vocals both moving and musically thrilling. (For the record, this performance is not, say, the equivalent of the Alexis Smith Phyllis or the Glynis Johns Desiree; this is a genuinely sung rendition.) This is the warmest, most human George I've seen, and I've seen all of them in NYC. But, to each his own.
