Great post, thank you. I must say having read this, and having read the New York Times review after the original transferred to Broadway, I was completely mystified by this production. I got absolutely none of this from actually seeing the production on stage (I am speaking of the revival. I didn't see the original). While it's clear reading things like this post, and the Times review, in retrospect, what we are meant to get from this play, I saw none of that on display on stage. I was scratching my head from start to finish and even fell asleep for a few minutes (very rare for me). Allison Janney, who I love, was oddly not connecting with me, and particularly the insane over the top performances from the college aged children were just awful. It seemed they were going for cheap laughs. I couldn't believe THIS was the highly regarded Six Degrees Separation I had always heard mentioned with such admiration.
