I saw Somegoro Ichikawa and he really was extraordinary - had no idea his English so limited, although he displayed somewhat of an accent in his pronunciations. He was only 27 at the time, and a renown Kabuki actor - he played the role for about 5 months in 1970. He was apparently under tremendous pressure doing the role -- I quote from one article (the English translation is a little wonky): "And if he fail acting the role good enough, it would not only embarrass himself, but Japan would also be in shame…" Imagine if a bad review from Clive Barnes could cause you to bring shame to your entire country!
