Gingold Theatrical Group’s Project Shaw, under the leadership of Artistic Director David Staller, continues its 12th Season when it presents its 123rd concert presentation with Shaw’s two one-act comedies Press Cuttings and Dark Lady of the Sonnets on Monday, May 22 at 7pm, at Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre (2537 Broadway at 95th Street).
Directed by David Staller, Press Cuttings features Paxton Whitehead (General Mitchener of the Army Council), Tim Jerome (Prime Minister Blasquith), Christine Pedi (Mrs. Farrell), AJ Shively (An Orderly), Andréa Burns (Mrs. Banger), Cady Huffman (Lady Cynthia Fanshaw). Mirirai Sithole is Narrator. Dark Lady of the Sonnets features Tim Jerome (The Warder), AJ Shively (William Shakespeare), Andréa Burns (Queen Elizabeth), Mirirai Sithole (Mary Fitton), and Cady Huffman (Narrator).
In Press Cuttings, it’s 1909 and the men in charge of England are having a wild time trying to adjust to the Women’s Rights movement!. Press Cuttings is Shaw's "suffragette comedy," involving a Prime Minister in drag (Tim Jerome), a conservative General out of control (Paxton Whitehead), a rebellious orderly (AJ Shively), and some very determined women (Christine Pedi, Andrea Burns, Cady Huffman).
In Shaw’s 1910 comedy, Dark Lady of the Sonnets, Shakespeare (AJ Shively) has a secret rendezvous with Queen Elizabeth (Andréa Burns), who may or may not be one of his inspirations for some of his most treasured sonnets.
According to Staller, “We’ve got wall-to-wall dynamic women this season, thanks to Shaw and his tireless lifelong efforts on behalf of women’s rights. In Press Cuttings, men (as usual) bear the ironic brunt of his scorn for small-minded hypocrisy. In Dark Lady of the Sonnets, we get none other than Shakespeare and Elizabeth the Queen in a verbal duel of wits! This pair of rarely seen short Shaw comedies are just the thing for Spring.”
Tickets are $35 and are available by calling (212) 864-5400 or online at www.symphonyspace.org. Special reserved VIP seating available for $50 by contacting the Gingold office 212-355-7823 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Now celebrating its 12th year, Gingold Theatrical Group's Project Shaw made history in
December 2009 as the first company ever to present performances of every one of Shaw's 65 plays (including full-length works, one-acts and sketches). They are now also including plays by writers who most inspired Shaw to begin his playwriting career, including work by Chekhov, Ibsen, Wilde, Barrie, and Harley Granville-Barker--while continuing its new play development and educational programs.
For those interested in lively off-site discourses, each Project Shaw event is followed by a talk-back with cast members. GTG’s David Staller is also hosting a monthly Shaw Club discussion group. They meet the Wednesday before every Project Shaw event at 520 8th Avenue. Reservations required 212-355-7823 or email@example.com. The next Shaw Club is on May 17.
The 2017 Project Shaw Season WOMEN TAKE THE STAGE: Celebrating 100 years of Women’s Rights in NY continues with Getting Married (June 26), Super Shaw Women (July 17), Rachel Crother’s A Man’s World (September 18), Captain Brassbound’s Conversion (October 23), Elizabeth Robins’s Votes for Women (November 20), and Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance (December 18).
Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre space is completely disabled accessible. Symphony Space is located in Manhattan at 2537 Broadway (at 95th Street).
