The show opens tonight, so Sergius's performance would have been a critic's performance.

I personally have found out high expectations almost always end in unfulfilled expectations when I go to the theater, so for me that may be part of it. But I think part of it is about whether you buy into the whole premise of this production -- it is very old-fashioned, and really plays into the idea that Midler is playing Midler-and-Dolly at the same time. Midler's performance is about the big numbers and the comic set pieces. Those parts are extremely entertaining, but I never felt that she lost herself in the character.
