The early "Sunday..." fervor changed somewhat as the show moved into the last weeks of March. I heard more grousing about the production values, the crowded stage, the direction, and Gyllenhaal's singing. I went Easter and wrote a couple of glowing posts, which inspired others to weigh in with reservations, some very strong.
Expectation is a killer. I went to "Sunday..." more intrigued that filled with anticipation. And though it took me the first half of the first act, I was entirely won over, and by the end, so much so, I now hold this production close as one I will cherish. Many don't feel that way, and I wonder if the early praise -- to the rafters -- created expectation that was unfair. Chromolume aside, it's a very bare bones staging, almost Encores still. I wonder if all of the reporting left people wanting more. I can say that I hear this about another little show -- "Hamilton" -- at least once a week.
