Always look forward to reading Jesse 21's reviews but this one seems unfair to me. Basically it's a review of the original production and showing how the revival doesn't hold up in comparison. I think for those who did not see the original which is probably a vast majority of current theater goers, there will be nothing to compare and I imagine if you go in with fresh eyes, this revival will be a revelation. People will understand what kind of pleasure the Golden Age musical provided. I saw the show with Pearl Bailey which I loved and saw a Channing revival which I most certainly didn't. This one was pure pleasure from start to finish. With regard to whether or not Midler fully inhabits the character of Dolly, well Dolly is basically a cartoon and there's plenty of room for the personality of the star to shine through. I think she did just that and the audience I saw it with seemed to enjoy her performance immensely
