I haven't seen the current production — I had a chance but I was out of town at the time — but if there is a problem with Midler's performance, it may be that the problem is partly in the show itself. I know this is a minority opinion here, but I think there are problems in the writing. In WIlder, Dolly has a desperation factor that is missing in the musical, leaving the actress with less to play. And even in the Wilder plays, the moment when Vandergelder suddenly realizes that Dolly is the woman for him seems to come out of nowhere. This is even more true in the musical. Gower Champion seems to have had a genius for papering over such empty spaces, but without Champion . . .
