i must disagree so very strongly with Jesse's assessment of both Bette Midler's performance and Gavin Creel's performance. I have seen many Dolly's from Pearl Bailey to Carol Channing (in the first revival) to Tovah Feldshuh to countless others in stock and community productions. Ms Midler stands with the very best of them. No, she does not do the Dolly of Carol Channing and I thank God for that (nothing wrong with Ms Channing's Dolly but it was her own and those who imitated her did so at their peril.) Ms Midler's Dolly Levi is different in that at the beginning she is truly a woman at her wit's end, tired and so eager to get out of the frenzied life she is living. Listen to her monologue at the beginning of "Before the Parade..." When she says "He is as good as mine." it is less a woman who has always been confident of the outcome than a woman who just now realizes her goal is within reach. Even as she addresses the Judge i was aware that Dolly Levi was putting on a show using her wiles to win rather than someone who just has won all her life. I was truly moved by this Dolly Gallagher Levi in a way that no other has moved me. Ms Midler's formidable stage presence and enormous warmth in addition to her acting talent made this, for me, a theater experience to remember. Creel also has seldom shone so bright. With all his infectious enthusiasm he seemed more like someone who is making a striking Broadway debut rather than a season veteran who will surely earn award nominations for this effort. I do agree with you abut Beanie Feldstein. I just want her to be in every show I see from now on. I am certain that you were very sincere and very disappointed to write your review of "Hello, Dolly" but I feel that your diappointment stems from the fact you went to it with expectations of recreating a glorious memory of your youth rahter than a willingness to look at ti with fresh eyes. I do however continue to look forward to your reviews here on the board. You are an invaluable asset to the Chat community.
