I saw both the Broadway production and the film and I thought the film felt flat--perhaps because the play simply put us all in that room where Ouisa and Flan told the story. The screen just lacked some of the immediacy and intimacy--as you say, that may simply have been a function of the differences in media. What it did do was provide a record of Stockard Channing's wonderful performance and give wider audiences a chance to hear Guare's dialogue. That in and of itself justified it.
