But before everyone pounds me into the cyber pavement, I think it might make the entire first act quite compelling. Re-minted a bit, from the hat shop on. And that moment when Irene, en route to the 14th Street parade, turns to Dolly full of romantic hope (a moment that always gets me a little.) The idea of Dolly who is simply an Irene who went in another direction. Two businesswomen d'un age certain. Murphy will of course work hard to sustain all of Midler's house laughs. The production will be in place when she arrives, and she must still fit into the staging. But there's something interesting about Murphy and Baldwin, who are generally speaking closer in sensibility, each finding a new partner on this one summer day. I'd like to see Murphy, too.
