And then the "Bandstand" recording. Wow, just wow.

I've resisted the show, but two hearings of the recording, and I'm there. Score-wise, this certainly seems the real deal, a beautiful, rangy yet still of-a-piece work of musical theater. I'm not yet very familiar with the story, and obviously haven't seen the production. (Is the book an issue? In terms of the lukewarm reception? A generic question, of course). But this album is a keeper. Take two of Richard Oberacker's lush songs -- and perhaps they aren't even the most representative of the show's 40's flavor -- "This is Life" and the repeated "Welcome Home." What an explosion of emotion and melody. Its rueful reprise by Osnes in the eleven o'clock spot (?) is heartbreaking, and her vocals are superb. The arrangements (instrumental and vocal) and orchestrations are quite wonderful.

Heading to "Bandstand."
