| I saw the Paper Mill version in Oct., 2015, probably early in its run at that venue. According to the flyer I picked up with my playbill, the production was scheduled to run through Nov. 8th. The ending I saw was different than the Broadway one; however, it may well be open to interpretation. After the contest there was a final scene that I believe takes place back in Ohio. Some time has passed. Donny and Julia are now a couple. They are getting together with the guys from the band. I got the impression that they're in someone's basement or perhaps a VFW Hall. They watch what appears to be a newsreel about the contest -- the band that won the contest has not been successful and their song is not a hit with the public. They look back on the experience with some perspective and laugh about it. It seems like they have all moved on a bit and have begun putting their lives back together. My guess is that they plan to keep the band together, but mostly for local events like weddings and bar mitzvahs. I don't think they have any big time ambitions for the band. Anyway that is the way I remember it and the way I interpreted it. It was a very low key ending, but I felt it was true to the story and perfectly plausible. I suspect that the producers wanted a much more upbeat ending for Broadway. Overall I think the Broadway production is a great improvement over the Paper Mill one. The story is tighter, the direction much better with some haunting images, and the score is now an excellent one -- 7 musical numbers from Paper Mill were dropped and 5 new ones added, all of which are an improvement. My only caveat is that IMO the original ending I saw was better and made more sense. It should be noted that at least one other ATC-er (who was either new to the board or someone who rarely posts) commented some weeks ago about the Paper Mill production and either saw a different ending or had a different interpretation of what I saw. I asked this poster to provide more details, but he (or she) never responded. |
