"They stood on principle and went home to contented obscurity" is certainly more plausible than "They stood on principle and got famous anyway," at least in those happy days before the current era of instant fame. But it's easy to see the writers' (and producers', probably) attraction to the latter, especially since the book takes the easy/predictable/crowd-pleasing choice at every opportunity.
