| Well sure. But I was exhausted watching the almost non stop dancing, which distracted me from dialogue scenes, and one and two person songs. I think dance needs to help tell the story, or define character. For most of thsi show, except in scenes where the band was playing at a club, I had no idea why anyone was dancing, except that the choreographer was following the 'shark dancer' mantra - if they stop moving, they will die. Dancing is not special or evocative if it never stops. For me Bandstand was the equivalent of a production of WEST SIDE STORY where the entire company dances in the background during ONE HAND ONE HEART and TONIGHT. This is the kind of thing that a lot of todays 'director choreographers' who are actually 'choreographer directors' do. dance dance dance regardless of what the show and situation might need. I find this reductive. And in the case of Bandstand, distracting. No need to be snarky. I know full well that musicals have singing and dancing and acting in them. I've been attending them for over 50 years. Happily. |
