I noticed that a couple of times too, but it didn't bother me. I just accepted it as part of the show's unique style and the way it created its own world of musical language. At times a song would be sung diagetically and moments later that same song was apparently being sung as a book song. Again it didn't bother me for the same reason. Actually if you examine some of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals (in particular, The Sound of Music but possibly small moments from other shows), it isn't always clear if the characters are bursting into song or singing a real song diagetically.
