I am one of TalkinBroadway's critics in the SF Bay Area. It's rare that we are given a copy of the script. In fact, only one theater company (in my years of reviewing) has provided we critics with a copy of the script. And that is more helpful for when I'm writing my review, because it's too dark to read in the theater.

Mainly I take a notepad with me and write brief notes (impressions, bits of dialogue, notes on sets or costumes, etc.) during the show. In the past I have used a very tiny light to help, but now I either struggle along in the dark or wait until a brighter scene. Sometimes I will make additional notes at intermission.
