That other poster, who didn't respond, was probably me. My apologies. I saw one of the last preview performances at Papermill and opening night as well. My recollection of the last scene is Donny, Julia and the band were seated in a movie theatre watching the MGM film, which was the culmination of the contest - which they didn't win. A bobbysoxer sees them and asks for an autograph. During the scene with the bobbysoxer, you learn that the band has gone on to be a success; the bobbysoxer's father served in the war and that her whole family are fans and will be coming to see the band perform that night. Donny signs an autograph and invites her and her family backstage after the concert. The scene ended with Donny, Julia and the band exiting the movie theatre into a crowd of fans and photographers. Curtain.
I also saw the last preview performance and opening night on Broadway. The scene was largely the same except that it began with Donny, Julia and the band exiting the movie theatre, discussing the film they had just seen. The exchange with the bobbysoxer was the same. The scene segued into a montage of the band performing on a national tour, which is the epilogue to the show.
Basically, except for the the change of locale and the addition of the final montage, the last scene remained unchanged. |
