I usually take short notes, usually snippets of dialogue I want to remember, or the title of song or a plot point.

Even though I write in the dark, I often can read my own scribbles.

I've found that most Broadway shows will offer you a script, or send you the PDF for it, so you can quote any lines, etc.

Nowadays, it's de rigeur to attend certain press previews that are set aside for the critics (prior to the opening).

But years ago, when I reviewed for the S.F. Examiner, then an afternoon newspaper, I remember attending the opening of a show at A.C.T. or a national tour at the Golden Gate, and racing back to the office to file my review. (The Examiner was only about a 10-15 minute walk away.) You had only about an hour or so to make your deadline, so you'd have to think fast and type fast, so it would appear in the next afternoon's Examiner.
