Love the question and the varied responses. For my part, I scribble in the dark on a small spiral pad, writing large and usually only one or two notes per page. During intermission, if there is one, I go through what I wrote and clean up my notes so I can actually read them. For first 20 mins or so, I focus on getting the characters straight by describing their appearance (the mother is the one with the red hair; X and Y are cousins) so that I get things right in the final review. Also try to catch snippets of dialog, lyrics (including period music used in background), and details about sets, costumes, lighting, and sound design. After all that, I take fewer notes and try to get caught up in the production itself. I agree that a copy of the script is a godsend; capturing quotes accurately and fully is a real challenge without the script.
