To borrow a phrase from my writing partner (who, like me, is a straight white male; writing on the day of last year's Tonys): "I have nothing in common with a lesbian cartoonist who grew up in the 70’s; I have everything in common with a lesbian cartoonist who grew up in the 70’s. I have nothing in common with the man who killed Alexander Hamilton; I have everything in common with the man who killed Alexander Hamilton. I have nothing in common with a Jewish milkman in Russia, an abused African-American woman in the rural south, an aging Frenchman grappling with dementia, a reporter whose child was stolen from her, a down-and-out rocker looking to change his luck, Liberian war widows, prisoners in a Japanese internment camp, or sexually frustrated German teenagers in the 19th century; I have everything in common with all of them."
