| Excellent all around. I got a 16th row orchestra seat from TKTS for $86 and saw everything from under the balcony (except for a little bit of the heads and shoulders of Barnaby and Cornelius in a very short scene atop the Horace Vandergelder set). My legs are very long but they did fit into the seating. The sets and costumes really are uplifting. And the ensemble and its precise execution of the beautiful choreography are beyond delightful: these are impeccable, joyously proud professionals doing a great great job, and it's so inspiring to see. The cast is terrific. And what Jerry Zaks has done is wonderful. The pace and ebullient confidence of the comedy playing seem all of his signature style. I hadn't remembered how much Minnie Fay is given to do in the show. Is that part of the history of it, or was that inspired by the particular charm of this actress? Donna Murphy was excellent, exuberant, and seemed so happy to be able to seize the opportunity. I never saw Channing nor have I seen Midler. I saw Ginger Rogers and Pearl Bailey (both perfectly charming, but, then as now, I was more impressed by the professionalism of the show than by the story or the principal characters.). The show left me feeling so happy. The colors, the voices, the surety of the delivery and, in a positive way, hardly any depth. It's about life, and willpower, and one woman's very practical ability to generate positive outcomes. And, as such, it's like taking a bath in sunlight. Ms. Murphy is finding a little bit of Mrs. Strakosh here and there in her voice, and a lot of welcome, trumpet-like clarion tone in her bravura singing. The Ephraim moments are straightforward rather than excessively poignant, which seems fine (although, on film, Streisand was able to generate a little more, effective sentiment in her oak-leaf speech). One of the most enJOYable, playful shows to be seen. What you see is what you get. Color, joy, professionalism, escapism, and a very strong, clear-headed message about capitalism and generosity. The cast took a while to come out, but every single one of the principals were generous with their time for every selfie and autograph request. That blew my mind. |
