I saw Harvey do it in 1985, when he'd already won all the awards and written LA CAGE. He came back for a brief stint as Arnold opposite Tom Stechstulte (?) and Fisher Stephens (and a very beautiful Craig Sheffer).

I was 19 and was blown away by the whole thing. It was an especially memorable evening because that night in March was unusually hot and they hadn't turned the A/C on, so it was a sauna in the Helen Hayes and I remember Harvey being drenched in sweat.

But even when he was barely 30 I recall wondering how Arnold could manage to have all these dreamy goyish boys at his feet? Harvey has always been a taste I've never quite acquired. I acknowledge that he has an innate warmth and sweetness, but he is also a real NYC oddball: loud and weird and opinionated and of course, that voice. (Interesting that he was notorious enough to be imitated by Jon Lovitz on SNL so soon after coming on the theatre scene.)

I've never seen the play with anyone else in the role so I am very eager to see what Michael Urie brings to it. I've seen him in the Harry Hay play Off-Broadway and then in HOW TO SUCCEED and in his solo BUYER AND CELLAR and I loved him in each one. I find him insanely cute and also quite mad, but with the ability to bring things down and ground scenes in reality. And he's not so handsome that his insecurities won't be believable (even though I think his eyes are about as dreamy as anyone around's).
