I did. I never knew "Julius dahlink" except for one time I shook his hand and a second time he passed through the room as I was interviewing for a job at City Opera. I ended up working at The Met, instead. By the time the book was written there was a fair amount of sewage under the bridge that was the relationship between Julius and Beverly, so I am disinclined to believe everything he had to say about her. In reading my own previous comments, at lest as quoted back to me, perhaps I wasn't over nice to her. She was a phenomenal singer, and when I realize we also had Sutherland and Caballe singing overlapping repertoire at the same time, it is nothing short of astonishing. Of the three, Sills was by far the most riveting on stage. She was not bad to work with, and I suspect if I had done so more often than I did (as I did with Sutherland/Bonynge) I might have developed a closer relationship with her. It is just that her PR people created such a picture of her, one that probably no superlative artist could have actually lived up to. She was far from the most difficult singer I ever worked with, Mr. or Ms. __________________gets that honor, but equally far from the media personality that showed up in her two biographies. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. BTW I did work with Ms. Horne on many occasions, always happily, and she worked well with most of her colleagues. Beverly Sills was not one of them. I don't think the fault was entirely on one side or the other. Marilyn did not play as effectively to a general public as Beverly did, therefore most of the press from Milan was skewed towards the Redhead from Brooklyn.

At this late date it is probably impossible to get a real read on Ms. Sills, a complicated personality. There are many with strong opinions about her, some favorable, some less so.
