| There is no question that Sills was a phenomenal singer. Also, that there are always(at least)two sides to every story. It's just that--nothing to overshadow the artistic accomplishments--there are a lot of stories about Bubbles. The one involving Horne--who never had any problem with Sutherland or Caballe, by the way--is that she very much WAS acclaimed--and rightly so--for her phenomenal singing at Sills' La Scala debut. When Sills was to bring "Siege of Corinth" to the Met, she supposedly made sure Horne was not in the cast and, needless to say, Horne did not appreciate that. Sills got Shirley Verrett, also a great singer, and someone with whom Sills could get along. |
