| You know, it had not even occurred to me that all three of the women I'd thought of were British. How funny. You're right that the character isn't remotely that, but I wonder if any of the three might have been believable as an American or an Irish-American or however one might interpret Dolly. Lucille Ball was someone else I'd thought of as a possibility, but, of course, there's the matter of the singing. And I don't think, as big a TV star as she was, she was ever box office at the movies. And I wonder if, had she been cast, Dolly would have become yet another variation on her "Lucy" character instead of Dolly. |
