| Ya know, I forgot about Lucy. Of course we'll never know, but I suspect that she would have been far, far better as DOLLY! than as MAME. For one thing, the singing in DOLLY! is a lot easier, and also somewhat less extensive. Also, I think one of the main problems in MAME is that Lucy is obviously so uncomfortable because she is clearly aware that she's too old for the role and can't sing it properly, whereas both of those things would have been far less an issue in DOLLY! If she had been cast in DOLLY! with a good director, and if she had gone back to her old TV persona rather than the dry grand-dame persona she adopted late in life, she might have been great in the DOLLY! movie. | |
