The question he raises isn't whether or not the cast will "work" -
the question is surprise that they aren't "A-level", "stellar", "A-list", or even semi-stars who have a history of association with Prince.
Whatever we think of the various talents of Ziemba, Skinner, Uranowitz, Yazbeck, Chuck Cooper, etc.,
when you look at recent shows presented at the Friedman by Manhattan Theatre Club from just the past 2 years,
I think it can fairly easily be argued that this cast does not represent the musical-theatre equivalents of, say,
Laura Linney, Cynthia Nixon, Michael McKean & Richard Thomas, Frank Langella, Linda Lavin, Mary-Louise Parker, Ruth Wilson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Blythe Danner, etc.
