It worked for Judy Holiday but not for Carol Channing

Miss Holiday's friends wrote a special scene for Adam's Rib, so that this supporting actress had a chance to shine.Studio Head Harry Cohn relented and Gave Judy Holiday her Broadway role in Born Yesterday...I read an interview with Ernest Lehmen who said he hadn't seen Channing in the role, but based on the reviews and prizes, He was going to sign her based on reputation. In what must have a plan, before Dolly was cast, Channing took a supporting role in Modern Mille, won a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. That should have snagged her her own role, so to speak; But When Lehman went to see Millie he was in shock. Saying something like She was so intense in only two songs. If she _STARRED in a movie, she would have driven the audiences into the street So Miss Channing's plan, if that's what it was, backfired.........The Cohn story is from the Bob Thomas bio.... And Streisand getting the role was News; I remember, somewhere in the 66-67 school year, a box in the NY times stating, "Miss Streisand to Be film Dolly.
