But it's interesting that what she said to you is not the reason that Gordon says she gave. What she said to you is much more defensible than the old-fashioned comment. You can disagree with her statement to you, but i'm sure she's not the only person who feels that way. Given Sills's own repertoire and what she presented at NYCO when she was was general director, the old-fashioned statement is kind of odd.

Of course, it may also be that she felt that the role for which she would have been vocally more right in Regina is Birdie, and perhaps she didn't want to take the second lead, even though it can be argued that in both the opera and the play, Birdie is the better role for an actress (or singer).
