A friend told me the same story some years ago. I always wondered if it was true or just a bit of folklore. Sounds like he was right. Sad, because Channing was given such idiotic material in Millie and, while charming in her inimitable way, could only do with it what was there (I think the whole movie is pretty stupid, to be honest). I saw her stage Dolly in 1995 and I think she could have done a great job in the movie, with a director who could help her tone down the stage dimensions--she is a very smart woman and surely could have done so.
