a low down, knowing urban quality, the Mae West delivery

Those are fine qualities for a Fanny Brice or even possibly for a Daisy Gamble, but not really for Dolly Levi (born Gallagher). Streisand was enjoyable in the film and her vocals were beyond crtiticism, but at 27 her big numbers "Before the Parade Passes By" and the title song lost all their poignancy because she was just too young to bring the proper emotion to the part-- the parade wasn't going to pass her by any time soon and she hadn't been away long enough for her to meaningfully promise she'll never go away again. The film is not hard to watch, but there just is no resonance.
