| But Preston had name value, even if not as a movie star per se--he started out playing villains in Westerns and by the time TMM was filmed, he had strong national recognition--remember this was a time when people bought cast albums regularly and the show had been featured on TV variety shows. I think Rosalind Russell was still considered a pretty big star when Gypsy was made, only a few years after Auntie Mame, and Natalie Wood was one, too, if only on the basis of West Side Story. I don't think anyone thought the films of How to Succeed and 1776 were any better than, for the most part, reasonably faithful recordings of stage shows (though I will never forgive them for cutting "Paris Original" and for casting Blythe Danner instead of Betty Buckley!). |
