| I saw a screening at BAM earlier this month. It's quite atmospheric. At the subsequent Q&A, in which director Michael Almereyda, Lois Smith and the cinematographer participated, Almereyda said he thought the the first part of his film was less funny and snappy than the staged play had been. Lois Smith had invited him to see the original production at the Mark Taper in Los Angeles to see if it interested him as a possible film project. He said he had wanted to work with her. He mentioned that the Mark Taper production took place in a nursing home and he suggested that the setting be changed for the film. The film takes place in Marjorie's home and that setting was retained for the New York production, which began rehearsals immediately after the film completed shooting. He said he believed the changed setting was kept for the published version of the play. |
