| For a start, none of them were 71. (Andrews was 59, I think, when she started V/V and look at what that schedule did to her!) Ball was 49 at the time of WILDCAT and both Jackman and Burnett were in their early 30's when they had their big Broadway successes. I haven't seen the show but it seems a very sensible, pragmatic decision for a 71-year old woman to take a break at this stage and regroup her energies for the next phase of the run. Especially when they have contracted a big Broadway headliner, two-time Tony-winning star to cover for Ms Midler when she's off. I think some of the stars of other Broadway shows which also started previews in March/April are now starting to take holidays, it's just they don't make headlines. I know you're not being overtly critical, but I really don't see this as a "thing". Midler seems to have been really giving her all to the production and despite whatever diva-ish antics she may have gotten up to, from the outside it seems to be she's been a class act (as demonstrated in her Tonys acceptance speech). And I am not a particular Bette Midler fan, for the record. |
