| Please GOD that they aren't planning this for Kelli O'Hara, who I much admire in most of what she has done (by far the finest Julie Jordan I've ever come close to seeing) but just as Anna was really not ideal for her, Eliza is even less so. Sure, she could sing it, and not everybody can, but she can't act it or BE her. Having witnessed O'Hara sing AND act the hell out of the role a decade ago in an NY Phil semi-staged concert, I can barely begin to tell you how wrong you are. She became Eliza Doolittle, and had there been a revival in the cooker at the time, there'd have been no one else I'd rather have seen. But as Riedel's column points out, she's a bit long in the tooth today, and will be busy besides with Cosi fan tutte. |
