| New York Classical Theatre Continues its 2017 Summer Season of FREE Theatre in the Parks with MACBETH By William Shakespeare Open Rehearsals July 10 – 30 Performances July 31 – August 27 Following its acclaimed production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s 1775 comedy The Rivals, which plays through July 16, New York Classical Theatre - New York City’s ONLY all-free Off-Broadway theatre – will continue its 2017 Summer Season with William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Macbeth. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, ambition goes unchecked by moral restraint and destruction befalls all but a lucky few. This classic story of the perils of ultimate power is fueled by the supernatural forces that haunt the castles and forests of early Scotland. Will Dixon, who stars as Macbeth is joined by an ensemble cast including Ian Antal, Ally Carey, Claire Fort, Carter Horton, Josh Jeffers, M. Scott McLean, Evan Moore-Coll, Mark Murphy, Jamila Sabares-Klemm, Nedra Snipes, Clay Storseth and Jenny Strassburg. The production also features costume design by Sarita Fellows and fight direction by Sean Michael Chin. Much of the performance will take place within historic Castle Clinton. New York Classical has a 10+ year partnership with the National Park Service. Directed by New York Classical Theatre’s Founder & Artistic Director Stephen Burdman, Macbeth will begin performances in The Battery (meet outside Castle Clinton, via the 1 train to South Ferry or the 4/5 to Bowling Green) with performances taking place nightly at 7:00pm from Monday, July 31 through Sunday, August 20 (no performances on Thursdays). Following The Battery engagement Macbeth will play nightly at 7:00pm from Tuesday, August 22 through Sunday, August 27 (no performance Thursday, August 24) in Brooklyn Bridge Park (meet at Fulton Ferry Landing on Pier 1, via F train to York, 2/3 to Clark or A/C to High). New York Classical Theatre’s artistic hallmark is Panoramic Theatre : scripts are adapted for each iconic performance space and the audience put at the center of the action of the play, creating a deeply immersive theatrical experience. Their outdoor productions in large public locations push Panoramic Theatre a (literal) step further—at each performance, the audience follows the actors from place to place as the plot unfolds from scene to scene. For example, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the audience frolicked along with the fairies through the woods of Central Park, in Henry V they sailed (via ferryboat) with the army to invade France from Lower Manhattan (England) to Governors Island (France), and in Hamlet, they chased the mad Ophelia through the marble corridors of Brookfield Place. Like all New York Classical Theatre productions, Macbeth will be rehearsed and performed for free to the public. ABOUT STEPHEN BURDMAN Stephen Burdman (Founder & Artistic Director ) founded New York Classical Theatre in 2000 and is the vision behind the creation of Panoramic Theatre. Stephen has directed nearly half of Shakespeare canon. To date, he has directed 29 plays for the company. Some of his favorite productions include The Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, The Seagull, A {15-min!} Christmas Carol, Playing Moliere, Henry V (in The Battery and, via ferry boat, Governors Island), Hamlet, King Lear, Misalliance, Mary Stuart, Scapin, and The Triumph of Love. He attended the National Theatre Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and later received an MFA from the University of California, Irvine. In 1989, Stephen was selected to participate in the first young theatre artist exchange with the (former) Soviet Union and has been a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society since 1994. An avid supporter of Shakespeare on all levels, Stephen is the former Chair of the Artistic Committee of the Shakespeare Theatre Association. He has also been a panelist with The National Endowment of Arts, The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York and Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation. ABOUT NEW YORK CLASSICAL THEATRE New York Classical Theatre’s mission is to reinvigorate and create audiences for the theatre by presenting all-free productions of popular classics and forgotten masterpieces in non-traditional public spaces throughout New York City. All of their productions are staged using Panoramic Theatre— an approach to theatre created and used exclusively by New York Classical Theatre. Productions are conceived expressly for each unique venue, bringing life and vitality to non-traditional theatre spaces. Each script is then adapted to fully inhabit the public space. Using different areas to stage specific scenes opens up endless creative possibilities for both performers and the audience. By utilizing the expansive physical environment as the playing arena, audiences literally enter and inhabit the world of the play and become active participants in the drama unfolding around them. With performances throughout New York City, they serve a broad demographic of the urban landscape, spanning all ages, ethnicities and income levels. Rehearsing in public venues encourages their audience to actively observe the evolution of a production while demystifying the language and poetry of classical theatre. New York Classical Theatre firmly believes that the themes of the classics remain as relevant to our lives today as they were to their original audience. Through the lens of classical theatre we come to better understand human nature and our role in contemporary life. As a result, their free performances build new and future audiences for classical work by attracting many underserved and non-traditional spectators. |
