If only Audra would do "Robert and Elizabeth"

Seeing the calls below for Audra to do Eliza reminded me of that great forgotten role of Elizabeth Barrett in the superlative musical "Robert and Elizabeth" from circa 1964. If ever a part of depth and sonorous beauty were calling for Audra to perfect it, it's that one. And the theme so powerful still, of domestic abuse. For those who don't know, the lyrics are, in their own way, as sophisticated as anything Sondheim ever wrote, and the melodies lift the heart. I crave the day when I can hear Audra perform the absolutely extraordinary "Soliloquy" which commences Act Two, which begins with Elizabeth metaphorically "tied to her sofa in an airless room / like Andromeda chained to a rock" and ends with her rising up with a determination to walk inspired by the saving grace of her transformative lover Robert Browning, even though he has been banned from the house by her psychologically oppressive father. There is nothing so powerful in all musical theatre, and that alone calls on the unique gift of Audra.

Lincoln Center Theater could do no better than invite Bartlett Sher to direct such a theatrical thrill. Robert Browning of course would be Brian Stokes Mitchell. Watch the crowds form, watch the Tony voters trample each other for seats!
