| One of the times I saw Nathan Lane in the "Producers" he was dangerously close to losing his voice especially during "Betrayed"; but I've heard rumors he was asked to do Dolly. Danny LaRue did it in England -- word was that out of town he was very good and staying in character, but as they approached London he lost confidence and started to go back to his drag routine as Dolly. Didn't I once hear that David Merrick wanted Milton Berle, long famous for doing drag on his tv show (and also famous for being long :) ), to be a replacement Dolly with Jack Benny as Vandergelder (or maybe Benny alone just as Dolly, too)? |
