| Babe Williams in "The Pajama Game" isn't exactly a pushover nor is Calamity Jane. Even some of the famous sex comedies with Rock Hudson hinted in some that she wasn't a virgin. In fact she was a businesswoman in two of them -- an interior decorator in "Pillow Talk" and an advertising executive in "Lover Come Back", both with clients (which Dolly Levi has and pursues as well). Doris would have been a wonderful Dolly! I don't think she was planning on retiring from films, but her husband around the time of her last film in 1969 or so left her in debt and committed to a tv series when he died. At that time, if you did a tv series, it was pretty much almost understood in Hollywood that you were finished in feature films. Shirley Jones admitted as much in her autobiography when she talks about her decision to do "The Partridge Family". |
