I'm heartened by Indecent's surge at the box office. Although the traditional dogma is that only the Best Musical Tony has significant box office weight, the Best Play Tony winner usually gets a short-term bump as well. Maybe Best Director makes a difference, too. Best Director and Best Play/Revival often go hand in hand, so it is difficult to tease out the relative effect of each. I think this is the first year since Metamorphoses in 2002 when the Best Director of a Play went to a show that was still running that did not win Best Play or Revival.
Indecent may also be helped by the fact that it won two Tonys, and no play this season won more than 2. |
